Journey 2: Istanbul
Begin exploring Istanbul’s imperial heritage, which spans 1,700 years. Privately visit the timeless Hagia Sophia, one of the greatest surviving examples of Byzantine architecture. You then stop at the sixth-century Basilica Cistern. One of the most unusual structures in the city, the Basilica Cistern was built by Justinian I in 532 as an expansion to an earlier cistern built by Constantine the Great and had the capacity to hold 18 million gallons of water. See it for yourself and then continue to the site of the Hippodrome, a colossal stadium that once hosted horse races, gladiator fights, inaugurations and triumphal parades. Next, privately visit the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art, located in the lovely Ibrahim palace. The palace itself is impressive, but its contents are extraordinary: manuscripts, miniatures, woodwork, stonework, ceramics, glassware, metalwork and a wonderful repository of antique Turkish carpets. After lunch, stroll through the Pera District, the modern-day heart of Istanbul. Later this afternoon, embark on a private cruise along the Bosphorus.

Discover the Topkapi Palace when it opens exclusively for you. Completed in 1465 this was the seat of the Ottoman government and it was from here that the Turks ruled most of the Mediterranean and Western Orient. Enjoy lunch at the Istanbul Modern Art Museum and afterward, explore the 19th century Dolmabahçe Palace, the largest and finest example of Ottoman Baroque architecture in the city. The remainder of the day is at leisure.
